The Autobahn Youth Tour will distribute more than $280,000 in scholarships in 2009. But more than prize money, the Tour promotes excellence, showmanship, professionalism, and the Longhorn breed in the lives of young people. As a result, these leaders of tomorrow are challenged to think more about how they want to impact the future of their families, their communities, and the world in which they live. In the case of young Hattie Brittan, that community is Mae Sai, a rural town along the Thai / Burma Border.
Ms. Brittan has grown up with a love for all animals, and in spite of her young age, she has a heart and vision for the future. She rides horses, trains her two border collies, and has worked alongside her parents in North Thailand where they established a rural training center in 2006 to teach sustainable agricultural technologies to mountain farmers. During a recent visit to the United States, Ms. Brittan was introduced to Longhorn cattle and livestock shows by William Babler of Edgecliff, TX. She participated in four Longhorn shows through this past summer and attended the Youth Longhorn Camp hosted by the International Texas Longhorn Association.
Following the show, Ms. Brittan remarked, “Sienna is an answer to prayer…” because she now hopes to export this heifer to Thailand for the purposes of youth and community development projects. She believes that the heat resistance and heartiness of the Longhorn breed makes it particularly well suited for the harsh climate of North Thailand. With right mix of partnerships, preparation, and planning, the importation of this Longhorn heifer, semen, and new embryos could introduce generations of people to higher quality beef and to a sustainable lifestyle. Now, Ms. Brittan says, “All I have to do now is pray and ask God to get her there!”

“Sienna”, the heifer won at that Autobahn show, was born in November 2008 and was donated by Duane and Thresa Tabors, owners of Coyote Crossing Ranch located in Peaster, Texas. Following the show, they expressed their excitement not only about introducing new youth to the breed, but also about the potential to introduce the breed to Thailand. On August 15, at the North Texas State Fair in Denton, TX, “Sienna” again placed top in her class, and young Hattie placed first in showmanship alongside her new heifer. Together they truly make a winning combination.
The first registered Texas Longhorn in Thailand will be a welcome addition to Narrow Gate Farm and Dairy where the Brittan family lives. Narrow Gate Asia, Inc. and the Farm and Dairy Project is a Christian, Non-Profit livestock raising project under development in Mae Sai, Thailand. It is to be a model for the agricultural and business community in Thailand that utilizes the people, resources, and relationships of the farm to open doors to the community.
